The New York Yankees have placed right-handed starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka on the 10-day disabled list and have called up fellow right-hander Giovanny Gallegos from Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre, according to the Yankees’ public relations department.

Tanaka is dealing with right shoulder inflammation.

The 28-year-old has been having a rough 2017 campaign, going 8-10 with a 4.92 ERA over his first 23 starts. In 133.2 innings of work, Tanaka has allowed 138 hits and an alarming 28 home runs while striking out 141 batters.

This is Tanaka’s fourth major-league season.

The Yankees signed him out of Japan in January 2014, and the righty made an immediate impact during his first MLB season, making the All-Star team while going 13-5 with a 2.77 ERA in 136.1 frames of action. His season was shortened due to a partially torn UCL that did not require surgery.

The following year, Tanaka went 12-7 with a 3.51 ERA and posted a sparkling 0.994 WHIP across 154 innings. He surrendered 126 hits while walking just 27 batters, accumulating 139 strikeouts in the process.

Then, in 2016, Tanaka had his most strenuous season to date, throwing 199.2 innings and registering a 14-4 record with a 3.07 ERA. He gave up just 179 hits while tallying 165 strikeouts.

Gallegos, 25, has already pitched in nine games with New York this season, allowing nine runs on 15 hits in 11.1 frames of relief work.

He has appeared in 24 contests out of the bullpen for Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre, going 4-1 with a 1.69 ERA. Across 37.1 innings, Gallegos has surrendered just 22 hits while amassing 61 strikeouts.

Over six minor-league seasons, Gallegos has gone 21-18 with a 2.78 ERA over 158 appearances, 26 of them coming as starts.
