NXT Spotlight: Kay, Royce make perfect mean girls pairing

When WWE held its draft back in July to coincide with Raw and SmackDown becoming separate brands, the NXT roster wasn’t off limits. In fact, several of the Superstars from the company’s developmental division were drafted over to one of the main shows. What was left of the women’s division of NXT following the draft left a gaping hole.

You had Asuka as the NXT Women’s Champion and not much else. In a short amount of time, NXT’s women’s division is building momentum again after adding the impressive young Ember Moon and seeing solid development in Liv Morgan.

But don’t overlook Peyton Royce and Billie Kay.

Both Royce and Kay are relatively new to the WWE Universe, but they’ve both got plenty of experience in the business. Both women are from Australia, but that isn’t the only connection these two young ladies have. In fact, they were high school classmates. They both fell in love with professional wrestling and got into it at an early age.

Royce moved to Canada and was trained by former WWE, WCW and ECW wrestler Lance Storm. Later, both women ended up in the Sydney, Australia-based Pro Wrestling Women’s Alliance. There, the two had several matches against each other while Kay held the PWWA title on two occasions. She successfully defended the title against Royce twice.

Both women also competed for the all-women’s promotion Shimmer. There, Kay made a name for herself by working with some of the biggest names in female wrestling, including Serena, Mercedes Martinez and Sara Del Ray.

In April of 2015, Kay was chosen as part of a group to train at NXT. Included in that group was Royce.

Both women would make separate debuts on NXT television. It seemed WWE wanted to see what each woman had to offer. Both women were used primarily to help put over other talent, but WWE soon saw that the natural fit for both women was to be together. Good on them for recognizing that.

Together, Kay and Royce become completely different competitors. Before, they were being used for filler matches to showcase other talents, such as Moon. But a recent win for Kay over Morgan — with an assist from Royce — was a big step for the tandem.

In the below video, you see highlights of that victory followed by a backstage attack on Morgan. Kay and Royce then go as far as to call out Asuka. Now, most fans will roll their eyes at the idea of either of the Aussie’s being in the same ring with Asuka, but she is the NXT Women’s Champion and eventually, she’s going to need an opponent.

Back in 2009, WWE paired up Michelle McCool and Layla. At first, it seemed pretty random, but the girls clicked so well together and played the role of heels so well that they became one of the top acts in the company. Together, they became known as LayCool and together, they achieved plenty of success.

The tandem of Kay and Royce have formed a partnership in a new era in WWE, one that sees women’s wrestling in a completely different light. In less than one week, we will witness the first ever women’s Hell in a Cell match. Women are getting opportunities that they never have before, and a pair of experienced ladies that know each other so well and can feed off of one another, can easily be the cream that rises to the top.

Keep your eyes open for these two girls in the coming weeks and months of NXT programming.
