Will Love Lead US Ryder Cup Team Again

PGA Today

In 2012, Davis Love III experienced firsthand how brutally disappointing the Ryder Cup can be. He’s hoping the story will be completely different at the matches in 2016 from Hazeltine in Chaska, Minnesota.

The Associated Press and the Golf Channel are reporting that Davis Love III will be named the 2016 US Ryder Cup Captain early next week. Love is set to become the second consecutive repeat American captain as Tom Watson was the captain in 2010 and then again in 2014. Fred Couples, who was 3-0 as President’s Team Captain, was also in consideration to lead the 2016 team as was Paul Azinger, who captained the last American squad to win the Ryder Cup in 2008.

Love’s team entered the final day at Medinah up 10-6, but the Europeans staged an astonishing comeback and defeated the Americans 14.5 to 13.5.

Love, 50, was a popular captain on the 2012 team, played for six different Ryder Cup teams, and has won 20 times in his career on the PGA Tour.

The Europeans announced Wednesday that Darren Clarke will captain their 2016 squad.
