Today, the star-studded ownership group behind the expansion Los Angeles FC held a press conference. Minority owners of LAFC include recognizable figures such as Will Ferrell, Magic Johnson, Tony Robbins, and married duo Mia Hamm and Nomar Garciaparra.

In addition to Johnson, executives who have worked in other sports are also joining the new soccer club: Los Angeles Dodgers CFO Tucker Kain is part of the ownership group, as is current Golden State Warriors assistant General Manager Kirk Lacob. The extensive list of LAFC owners can be viewed on the team’s website here.
LAFC is scheduled to debut in the MLS in 2018. The league currently consists of 20 franchises, and is actively seeking to expand up to 28 teams in the coming seasons. LAFC joins Minnesota United and Atlanta United FC as clubs whose ownership has been established but who have yet to appear in MLS play.
LAFC will be taking the place of Chivas USA, a now-defunct MLS franchise who shared a venue with the longstanding Los Angeles Galaxy. Chivas USA was in operation from 2004-2014, and had an underwhelming team record of 92-149-79, posting extreme drop-offs in attendance in later years.
