Mind over matter is more than just a cliché

The phrase “mind over matter” may be a cliché, but for Dr. Raymond J. Petras (B.E., M.A., Ph.D) it’s so much more than that.

The power of the mind is on display in many different areas of everyday life, but is rarely used in the world of sports pain management. Instead, pain pills, cortisone shots, etc. are very popular when it comes to treating pain and inflammation.

So, how can the use of those aforementioned pharmaceuticals — and their side effects — be limited while also treating an athlete’s pain? Mind over matter.

One technique Petras applies is PsychoNeuro Pain Response, or PNPR. PNPR consists of four steps, from defining pain to controlling pain to determining if it is safe to eliminate pain to addressing mental anxiety, stress and fear involved with an athlete suffering an injury.

The technique is also known as Talking Away Pain, or TAP, with the athlete’s body acting as its own biofeedback mechanism.

According to Petras, PNPR/TAP “offers hope for health by engaging the conscious mind in interesting, focused, neutral and positive self-talk while the mind-body automatically improves in the quickest, most efficient and healthful way possible.”

Petras has a history of working with athletes all across North America for decades, using PNPR/TAP as alternative way to manage pain. He’s performed these techniques on the sidelines during football games, at his office and over the phone. Petras believes that the power of healing and pain management lies inside each person.

Those techniques carry over into the world of concussion treatment as well. Petras believes that aside from rest and Tylenol, PNPR/TAP can help ease post-concussion symptoms such as dizziness, nausea and headaches.

Petras has worked with various speed skating, golf, basketball and soccer teams/organizations (amateur, collegiate and professional) over the years, applying these methods, but Petras is not a medical doctor and does not practice medicine.

Aside from the obvious benefits of reducing pain and getting back on the field, there is an important financial element to healing as well.

Sports teams lose millions of dollars each year due to injury. Not only are they paying the salary of an injured player, but they must pay for a replacement as well. That doesn’t even take into account money lost based on change in the number of wins caused by injuries.

There are physical, emotional and financial benefits to using one’s mind over matter in order to manage pain. Petras’ PNPR/TAP techniques are designed to not just help manage pain, but to eliminate other negative factors associated with pain/injury.
