South Carolina lands 4-star QB Dakereon Joyner

South Carolina didn’t venture too far to land their latest prospect out of the 2018 class. Dual-threat 4-star quarterback Dakereon Joyner out of North Charleston, S.C. (Fort Dorchester) verbally committed to the Gamecocks on Sunday afternoon.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound in-state quarterback is rated as the No. 227 player in the cycle and the No. 10 dual-threat quarterback by 247Sports. He had fielded 15 total offers prior to committing to South Carolina. Programs such as Clemson, Ole Miss, Louisville, Oregon, North Carolina and Alabama, among others, were all in the mix. The crystal balls leaned heavily to South Carolina prior to the announcement.

That makes it commit No. 9 for the Gamecocks, who creep into the top 35 in regards to the ’18 class at No. 34. Joyner is the first quarterback for said cycle, though he already has plans to land more prospects to build around him.

“One, I’m going to get Xavier Thomas to flip,” Joyner told The State following his commitment. “I’m going to try to get him, Stephon Wynn, just everybody on board.

“To win a national championship, I need guys around me.”

That’s defensive end Xavier Thomas, the No. 2 player in the country who is currently verbally committed to play nearby for arch-rival Clemson, and fellow end Stephon Wynn, an uncommitted top prospect originally from South Carolina. Thomas and Wynn teamed up to play for powerhouse IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

Joyner’s a nice piece to the future puzzle for an offense that needs it. Effective quarterback play has been hard to come by recently for South Carolina, which finished 6-7 behind the No. 116 scoring offense at 20.8 points per game a season ago.
