The New York Rangers survived Game 5 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Washington Capitals and live to fight another day.
Down 1-0 with less than two minutes remaining in regulation and their season on the line, Rangers forward Chris Kreider fired a shot past Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby to send the game to overtime. 9:37 into the extra frame, captain Ryan McDonagh won the game with his second goal of the playoffs.
The goal sent Madison Square Garden into a frenzy and was New York’s biggest play of the season.
Washington leads the Rangers 3-2 in the series. Game 6 is scheduled for Sunday night in the nation’s capital.
