[UPDATE]: The Boston Red Sox have officially released recently designated third baseman Pablo Sandoval.

The Boston Red Sox have officially designated veteran third baseman Pablo Sandoval for assignment, the club announced on Friday morning. Prior to being designated for assignment on Friday morning, the seasoned corner infielder was serving a stint on the club’s 10-day disabled list due to a left inner ear infection.

It is also worth noting that the Red Sox recently released another veteran third baseman in Jhonny Peralta as well.

The 30-year-old slugger is currently in the midst of his third season as a member of the Red Sox. Before ultimately arriving in Boston back in 2015, he notably spent the first seven seasons of his big league career as a member of the San Francisco Giants. While infamously signing a five-year, $95 million free-agent contract with the Red Sox, Sandoval previously won a trio of World Series titles with the Giants.

Appearing in just 32 games as a member of the Red Sox thus far into the 2017 regular season, he had appeared in a mere three regular-season games for Boston in 2016. Over the course of 99 at-bats in 2017, Sandoval is hitting .212 with four home runs, 12 RBIs and a .269 on-base percentage. For his big league career, he is now batting .285 with 120 home runs, 521 RBIs and a .337 on-base percentage.

On the other hand, it remains to be seen as to how exactly the Red Sox address their void on the hot corner going forward.

“They’ve done a good job for us, no question,” Red Sox president Dave Dombrowski recently said of Deven Marrero and Tzu-Wei Lin, who have split time at third base. “They’ve stabilized the position, is the best way to say it — stabilized and provided some help for us. But I think you’re also in a spot that you’re always cognizant of trying to help the club however you can.”
