The Texas Rangers have decided to add a reinforcement to the bullpen. Per Stefan Stevenson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Texas has recalled right-hander Tanner Scheppers from Triple-A. Outfielder Jared Hoying was optioned to make room on the active roster. Additionally, right-hander A.J. Griffin was shuffled to the 60-day disabled list.

Scheppers has battled a variety of injuries in recent years since being tabbed as the Rangers’ opening day starter back in 2014. In limited duty last season, he posted a 4.15 ERA in 10 games at the big league level. Scheppers has pitched in 16 games out of the bullpen for Triple-A Round Rock, and has an ERA of 4.64 in just over 21 innings of work. Scheppers had emerged as one of the elite bullpen arms in the American League before struggling when moved to a starting role in ’14. He has been with the Rangers organization since being taken 44th overall in the 2009 draft.

Hoying was called up from the minors in mid-May and saw a decent amount of time in the starting lineup while outfielder Carlos Gomez was on the DL. Gomez was activated last Friday, though, and Hoying did not play in the Rangers’ three-game weekend series with the Seattle Mariners. In 62 big league at-bats this season, Hoying is slashing .210/.254/.290 with a homer and six RBI. He was a 10th round pick of the Rangers out of Toledo in 2010.

Griffin went on the DL with a strained intercostal muscle late last month. In eight starts this season, Griffin is 4-2 with a 5.77 ERA. He is in his second season with the Rangers after spending his first two big league seasons with the Oakland Athletics.

Scheppers will be available out of the bullpen when the Rangers begin a four-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday evening.
