Race for Eighth Heating Up in Eastern Conference

Does any team want to take charge and earn the final spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs?

A probable first round date with the Atlanta Hawks is on the line as four teams are within a game-and-a-half of the eighth and final playoff spot, yet no team is putting their best foot forward.

The Celtics are eight games under .500, clinging to the eighth spot in the East while the Charlotte Hornets  are only a half game behind Boston. Losers of six straight, the Indiana Pacers are just a game off the pace while the Brooklyn Nets sit 1.5 games back.

While the prospects of playing the conference’s top team in the first round might seem daunting, stranger things have happened in the NBA than an eighth seed winning a playoff series. Brad Stevens has the Celtics playing much better ball as of late and a playoff berth would be an invaluable learning experience for this young club.

The Charlotte Hornets might be the most playoff-ready of the four teams competing for the final spot, but home-and-homes with both the Hawks and Raptors along with hosting the surging Houston Rockets may put a dampener on the Hornets’ chances.

The Indiana Pacers were the top-seeded Eastern Conference team in 2014, but injuries, departures, and an inability to score in crucial moments have plagued the team in 2015. The Brooklyn Nets consistently lose the rebounding battle and have issues putting the ball in the basket as the team in ranked 23rd in scoring.

Which team wants to win, or maybe most importantly–which team will lose less as the season winds down?
