Patriots Julian Edelman says 19-0 talk is stupid

The New England Patriots captured yet another Super Bowl title last February. While the perennial playoff team will once again head into a season as the presumed favorites to win it all, Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman isn’t looking too far into the future.

In fact, the veteran wide out has a message for all of those people that believe the surging Patriots will finish with a perfect 19-0 record en route to a second consecutive Super Bowl title.

“You can’t worry about what other people say, honestly,” Edelman said, via the Boston Herald. “I mean, there’s no script to this thing. There’s no camera. This isn’t Hollywood. This is real life. When you go out and play in the National Football League, it’s one of those things where it’s even stupid to think about that. It’s never been done. You don’t really want to talk about it.

“My focus is more on trying to get ready for the season, trying to learn your teammates, form your identity. [The 19-0 talk is] stupid. That’s it.”

While the Patriots’ most recent Super Bowl title came in impressive comeback fashion against the NFC Champion Atlanta Falcons, New England has come up short before — both in the Super Bowl and in their search for a perfect season. Back in 2007, the Patriots finished the regular season with a perfect 16-0 record while ultimately missing out on perfection in Super Bowl XLII after 18 consecutive wins. The Patriots were defeated by the New York Giants, 17-14, that season.

However, Edelman did not break into the NFL with the Patriots until several years later in 2009, so it is no surprise that perfection is not on his mind.
