All the speculation will come true on Tuesday as San Francisco 49ers MLB Patrick Willis is set to officially retire without playing a snap after turning 30 years old.
San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York released a statement saying, in part, “On behalf of the entire San Francisco 49ers organization, my family, and our Faithful fans, I would like to thank Patrick for everything he has brought to this team and our community. Some of the greatest memories in the history of our franchise have come from his passion, dedication and sacrifice.”
Willis underwent season-ending toe surgery last season after playing in just six games. Willis, who made the Pro Bowl in each of his first seven seasons, played his entire eight-year career with the 49ers.
Willis could be joined by Justin Smith in retirement, adding to the eventful offseason in San Francisco.
