San Diego Padres Triple-A manager Pat Murphy has been promoted to the big leagues to serve as the team’s interim manager for the rest of the season. The Padres fired Bud Black yesterday.
Murphy, who was denied permission to talk to the Milwaukee Brewers about a job on Craig Counsell’s staff, was managing the Padres’ Triple-A team. He was the head coach at Arizona State from 1995-2009 before leaving amid NCAA investigations.
The Padres are 32-34 on the season, six games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the NL West. But after a loss last night, they’ve fallen to fourth behind the division, behind the Dodgers, San Francisco Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks.
