QB – Deshaun Watson – Round 1
The Texans mortgaged their entire 2018 NFL Draft to land what they hope is the quarterback of the future, especially after the Brock Osweiler experiment blew up in the team’s face. Watson led the Clemson Tigers to a College Football Playoff title last season, engineering the game-winning drive against Alabama to tie the bow on a marvelous career in Death Valley.
LB – Zach Cunningham – Round 2
There was no rhyme or reason to why Cunningham fell all the way to No. 57, but he did. The Texans wasted no time to land the linebacker, who led the SEC with 119 tackles in 2016.
The Scout’s Take
“The Houston Texans have been the ultimate “middle of the pack” team for three years; while they don’t regress a lot, they also don’t show a lot of improvement. They have won the AFC South two years in a row, but playoff success has not followed. This is a balanced division and nobody will run away with it.
The Texans are wasting good years with their dominating defense and pretty good run game because their inconsistency at quarterback gives them little chance to go to the next level. They have some aging veterans and their window might start to close, so there is a little sense of urgency to get beyond their usual 9-7 record.” – FanRag Sports’ Gary Horton.
