TJ Dillashaw: Dominick Cruz is ‘being a prima donna champ’

The news that T.J. Dillashaw is missing out on UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz’s second title defense did not sit well at all with the former champion.

UFC announced recently that Cruz will defend against Cody Garbrandt at UFC 207, and while Dillashaw cannot blame Garbrandt for jockeying to get the fight, Dillashaw sure blames Cruz for taking the fight.

“I got nothing against Cody Garbrandt, of course he should push for a title shot,” Dillashaw told Glory World Series (transcription via FloCombat). “It’s what we should all be doing. It’s Cruz, he’s the one making the decision and the UFC let him do it. Whatever it is, it doesn’t make sense to me that I’m not getting the title shot, but I’ll get my belt back eventually.”

Cruz won the title from Dillashaw in January at UFC Fight Night 81 in a split decision that left the audience split as well. Since then, Cruz defended the title against Urijah Faber in their rubber match and now has the UFC 207 bout coming up.

“I feel like he’s coasting right now,” Dillashaw said. “He’s being a prima donna champ, and he’s picking the fights that he wants. It’s not a sport anymore, and there’s no point of rankings. We went to a close split decision, and it was controversial in most people’s eyes. All the people I talk to say I won the fight, and I do so myself.

“All I want is the chance to prove that I won that fight. I met with the head of the UFC and they told me that they thought I’d won it. I thought that would be enough to get the rematch, but it’s not about who the best is in the sport anymore. It’s about who can talk the most trash and what’s going to the best for the company.”
