The Houston Texans managed just 9 points in their loss to the Denver Broncos on Monday night. Even more alarming, quarterback Brock Osweiler threw the ball 41 times and could manage just 131 yards on the 22 completions he did make.
All in all, it was a terrible day that has many Texan fans questioning whether the four-year, $72 million contract Houston gave Osweiler this past offseason was really worth it. That being said though, head coach Bill O’Brien still has faith in his quarterback.
“He’s a good player. I think he can play better, receivers can run routes better,” the coach said. “It has to get better. I can’t really pinpoint one thing.”
The coach was also adamant that he has not even considered benching Osweiler and turning to one of the backup quarterbacks. However O’Brien would probably have a different opinion if the Texans had a better backup situation. Currently Tom Savage and Brandon Weeden are the only other quarterbacks on the roster.
Still it is clear that Osweiler’s play is, and will be a very hot topic in Houston going forward. He is currently the third-worst ranked quarterback in the NFL for players with over 100 pass attempts. The only people with worse rankings than his 71.9 is Jets’ quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick (66.4) and 49ers’ passer Blaine Gabbert (69.6). So he must be much better going forward.
