San Diego Padres Fire Manager Bud Black

The San Diego Padres haven’t lived up to the expectations of a headline-grabbing offseason, and the first person to take the blame will be manager Bud Black.

The team announced that on Monday that Black has been relieved of his duties. Bench coach Dave Roberts will serve as the manager until an interim coach for the remainder of the season is named.

The Padres are 32-33 and sit six games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the NL West. Expectations were higher after general manager A.J. Preller acquired Justin Upton, Derek Norris, Matt Kemp, Wil Myers, Will Middlebrooks, Craig Kimbrel and signed James Shields in the offseason.

But Kemp has underachieved again, hitting just .249 in 64 games. He has just two home runs. Myers spent time on the DL and Middlebrooks didn’t break out like the team was hoping. Even Kimbrel hasn’t been as dominant early on as he was with the Braves.
