United Airlines is set to buy the naming rights to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, home of the USC football team, according to Michael Smith and John Ourand of Sports Business Daily. The deal is expected to be for more than $70 million and 15 years, though exact details of the agreement have yet to be released.
This deal would be a record-high for college football stadium naming rights. The previous high was the 10-year, $41 mllion deal struck by Alaska Airlines for the naming rights to Washington’s Husky Stadium.
The Sports Business Daily report states that it’s unclear at the moment how United will attach its brand to the Coliseum, though school officials have said in the past “Memorial Coliseum” would be retained in the event naming rights were purchased.
The Coliseum is in need of extra funding, as the stadium is in the early stages of a $270 million renovation that is expected to be completed in time for the 2019 season.
The Los Angeles Rams played their home games at the Coliseum last year, along with USC, after moving from St. Louis. The Rams’ new Inglewood stadium was set to open in 2019, but it was announced Thursday that record rain in the area will delay the stadium’s opening to the summer of 2020.
The renovation to the Coliseum is also in line with Los Angeles’ bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics.
FOX Sports, which is partnered with USC, had been trying to sell the naming rights to the Coliseum since 2015. Los Angeles International Airport serves as one of United’s U.S. hubs and its CEO, Oscar Munoz, is a graduate of USC.
