[UPDATE]: The Los Angeles Lakers have officially waived guard David Nwaba in order to create an available roster spot for recently signed shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope secured a big-money commitment from the Los Angeles Lakers soon after the Detroit Pistons renounced his rights as a restricted free agent.

His short time on the unrestricted free agent market will result in the Lakers paying the guard $18 million on a one-year deal, according to Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com. Caldwell-Pope visited the Lakers earlier on Tuesday.

Caldwell-Pope landed with a Lakers team that was one of the few remaining with significant salary cap space to submit an $18 million-per-year offer. The 24-year-old guard stands in position to be a starter this season in Los Angeles, and how he fares in the minutes provided will determine what kind of value he’ll have on the 2018 unrestricted free-agent market.

The Lakers will add a third new starter to their lineup, in all likelihood, with this move. Caldwell-Pope figures to join Lonzo Ball and Brook Lopez as first-time Lakers first-stringers. Jordan Clarkson could well be relegated to off-the-bench duty as a result of this transaction, one that Gordon Hayward set in motion. Hayward’s decision to defect from the Jazz to the Celtics induced Boston to trade Avery Bradley to Detroit, and that led to the Pistons renouncing Caldwell-Pope’s rights.

Los Angeles represented the only place Caldwell-Pope visited during his few days on the open market.

The Georgia product became a steady starter for the Pistons over the past three seasons and played in at least 31 minutes per night in each of those slates. Caldwell-Pope averaged 13.8 points per game last season. He established his career-high mark for the playoff-qualifying Pistons during the 2015-16 season, pouring in 14.5 points per game.
