The Carolina Panthers have lost CB Teddy Williams, likely for the year. They just sent him to IR. To take his spot on the active roster, they activated CB Leonard Johnson.
Williams has a knee injury. It appears to be his left knee, and he felt it go in practice. Johnson, meanwhile, was on the non-football injury (NFI) list. He had Achilles surgery and was trying to come back from it, patiently putting his time into rehab.
When asked about the newest addition to the active roster, head coach Ron Rivera said:
“I think Leonard can bring a little energy to what we’re trying to do. He’s a guy that excels at playing the nickel position. That’s why we brought him here. It was just a matter of time before we had a chance to see who he is on the football field. We as coaches like what we saw. We were willing to take the chance on having this guy around on (NFI), and hopefully he can develop, as he gets more and more opportunities in our scheme.”
The Panthers have been struggling in the secondary this year. The loss of CB Josh Norman is certainly showing. They refused to give Norman the long-term deal he wanted, put him on the franchise tag, and then abruptly removed the tag and made him a free agent. He signed with the Redskins. While the Panthers do need to balance money and talent, it was a huge blow, and the subsequent cuts and injuries haven’t helped them improve.
