NBA and NBPA announce rosters for Africa Game 2017

On Thursday, the NBA and NBA Players Association announced the rosters for the upcoming NBA Africa Game 2017. It will mark the second time the NBA has played a game on the continent.

As was the case with the last game in 2015, the game will use a Team Africa vs. Team World format. All proceeds from the exhibition contest will go to UNICEF, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and SOS Children’s Villages South Africa.

Team Africa will be made up of African-born and second-generation African players. Los Angeles Lakers forward Luol Deng and Utah Jazz swingman Thabo Sefolosha will captain the team. Other players on the roster will be Clint Capela (Rockets), Joel Embiid (76ers), Bismack Biyombo (Magic), Salah Mejri (Mavericks), Victor Oladipo (Pacers), Dennis Schroder (Hawks), Emmanuel Mudiay (Nuggets), Serge Ibaka (Raptors), Gorgui Dieng (Timberwolves) and Luc Mbah a Moute (former Clipper).

Team World will be comprised of players from outside Africa. Captains of Team World will be Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki and Charlotte Hornets guard Kemba Walker. The rest of the roster includes Kristaps Porzingis (Knicks), Andre Drummond (Pistons), Courtney Lee (Knicks), Kyle Lowry (Raptors), DeMarcus Cousins (Pelicans), CJ McCollum (Trail Blazers), Jaylen Brown (Celtics), Leandro Barbosa (former Sun) and Wilson Chandler (Nuggets).

A number of NBA coaches, executives and staff will also be participating. Alvin Gentry (Pelicans), Michael Malone (Nuggets) and Erik Spoelstra (Heat) will be accompanied by a number of assistants, including Sidney Lowe (Wizards) and Jamahl Mosley (Mavericks). Raptors president Masai Ujiri will be on hand, as will NBA referees Zach Zarba and James Capers.

The game is set to go down from the Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg, South Africa, on August 5.
