Martin Truex Jr. has spent plenty of time leading races in the past two years, but it hasn’t been a path to Victory Lane. That is, until today.
For the fourth straight race, Truex Jr. led the most laps in the race, but for the first time in two years his day ended with a win.
It was an emotional win for Truex Jr. His girlfriend since 2005 has battled cancer for the past 18 months, going through numerous procedures to remove various organs, including parts of her stomach and ovaries. Also, his grandmother passed away on Wednesday.
There was no better time to end a 69-race winless streak.
The win puts Truex Jr. into the Chase, adding to an already impressive season. Truex Jr. has 13 top-10 finishes in 14 races this season. It was also crew chief Cole Pearn’s first career win.
Kevin Harvick finished second, followed by Jimmie Johnson, Joey Logano and Kurt Busch.
Truex Jr. led a race-high 97 laps. He’s currently second in points.
