We know that Los Angeles Lakers fans, former players and media alike are excited about rookie point guard Lonzo Ball.
However, Hall-of-Famer James Worthy may have taken things a step beyond reality when he compared Ball to all-time great Magic Johnson.
“He enhances everybody on the court,” Worthy said of Ball, according to TMZ Sports. “We haven’t had someone with that type of talent really since Magic.”
It’s cool that Worthy is excited about Ball, and the rookie definitely has the ability to make his teammates better, but we should probably pump the brakes on the Magic comparisons.
Also, Worthy’s choice of words is interesting, as Kobe Bryant fans may take him saying “we haven’t had someone with that type of talent really since Magic” as a slight to Bryant, but Worthy appeared to just be comparing floor general skills.
The Lakers selected Ball, who played his college basketball at UCLA, with the second overall pick of the NBA Draft in June.
Ball was the second point guard selected, with University of Washington product Markelle Fultz going to the Philadelphia 76ers at No. 1.
The Chino Hills, Calif., native won Summer League MVP after a spectacular all-around performance, averaging 16.3 points, 9.2 assists, 7.7 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game in six contests.
Los Angeles is hoping Ball will reverse its recent fortunes, as it has gone into uncharted territory by missing the playoffs four straight years for the first time in franchise history.
While it is probably unrealistic to assume that Ball will take the Lakers to the postseason in his first year, Los Angeles definitely appears to be on the right track.
