There’s no rule that says NFL Draft prospects need to be in attendance when their names are called.
While most early picks and high profile players appear at the numerous festivities and photo shoots that accompany the NFL’s premier offseason event, Jameis Winston is not one who normally follows the crowd.
Winston is widely expected to be the first player taken by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when the draft kicks off, but the former-Heisman Trophy winner has stated recently that he prefers to spend time with family and friends in Alabama as opposed to traveling to Chicago for the NFL Draft which takes place from April 30-May 2.

Winston flew to New York recently to meet with Commissioner Roger Goodell and other NFL officials, no details were provided about the discussions.
Critics of Winston have continuously stated his immaturity and run-ins with the law over the course of his Florida State career make him a high-risk draft pick, but by staying at home with family and friends instead of being in Chicago with a slew of soon-to-be millionaires could be a step in the right direction for ‘Famous Jameis.’
