The Cleveland Indians have recalled left-handed pitcher Ryan Merritt from Triple-A Columbus ahead of Monday night’s game against the San Francisco Giants. In order to make room on the 25-man roster, the team sent outfielder Tyler Naquin back down to Triple-A.

Merritt has made a single start this season as a member of the Indians back on June 17 against the Minnesota Twins. He allowed seven hits and two earned runs over four innings of work, while striking out two batters.

Down at Triple-A Columbus, he has made 14 starts this season and posted a 7-5 record with a 3.36 ERA with a 1.302 WHIP. Not known as a strikeout artist, Merritt has collected 72 Ks over 93.2 innings of work, while yielding 16 home runs in the same timeframe.

The left-hander achieved fame last season by starting Game 5 of the American League Championship Series against the Toronto Blue Jays and tossing 4.1 scoreless innings. He had made just a single major league start in his career prior to that outing during the 2016 regular season.

Despite having finished third in AL Rookie of the Year voting last season when he batted .289 with 14 home runs and and 43 RBIs, Naquin has appeared in just nine games in 2017 with Cleveland. He has gone 5-for-25 at the plate with one extra-base hit and zero RBIs, having been bypassed by fellow outfield prospect Bradley Zimmer.

At Triple-A Columbus this season, Naquin is batting .309 with a .372 on-base percentage to go along with five home runs and 16 RBIs over 35 games.
