Hall of Fame WR Michael Irvin ponders MMA foray

Michael Irvin observed two-time teammate Herschel Walker’s venture into the combat sports world several years ago and is admittedly curious about how he would fare in an MMA octagon.

I train MMA. I want to do it,” the former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver told TMZ. “I actually wouldn’t mind getting in and having a fight. Oh, my God, I would love to take a fight. What I wish they would do is maybe do some amateur MMA fighting, celebrity-style.”

Irvin’s celebrity-combat concept would be interesting and certainly would command an audience — a fight club for famous people — but this is generally the kind of activity such types avoid. That said, given all the reality programming available now, it’s hard to believe this hasn’t been attempted.

However, the 51-year-old Pro Football Hall of Famer did not sound 100 percent committed here, his training techniques notwithstanding. That would probably be a smart move as far as health preservation goes.

My wife says I’m her mule,” Irvin said. “She can’t have her mule out there getting hurt!

Walker, who played with Irvin in the late 1980s in Dallas before returning for two years in the late 1990s, partook in two MMA bouts from 2010-11 and won them both despite being nearly 50 at the time. Walker was also known for his freakish athletic abilities. Irvin was no slouch in that department either. Although, a rugged style isn’t typically attached to his career — nor is it for just about any wide receiver — but he’s already established himself as a consistent NFL media presence.

This would certainly be a high-risk hobby.
