Calgary Flames winger Matthew Tkachuk has been suspended for two games following a vicious hit of Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty on Sunday night that entailed Tkachuk dropping him with a high elbow. The hit immediately drew the ire of the remaining Kings on the ice, as Tkachuk was hit along the boards and headed to the bench himself as Doughty went back to the locker room.

The 19-year-old rookie has made an immediate impact on the Flames’ roster this season, scoring 13 goals and assisting on 33 others in his first 68 NHL games. His point total in tied for the second-highest on the team, as his assists rank third on the roster.

Following his penalty on Sunday night, Tkachuk has 96 penalty minutes on the season, which ranks him eighth in the league. He leads the Calgary squad in PIM this year, coming off having accrued 80 in just 57 games last season as a member of the London Knights in the OHL.

Should his suspension be upheld by the league, Tkachuk will watch the team’s game on the road against the Washington Capitals on Tuesday and Nashville Predators on Thursday from the sidelines. He’s currently eligible to return next Saturday against the St. Louis Blues.

Calgary is currently fifth in the Western Conference standings, having won nine of their last 10 games. Tkachuk coming out of the rotation may affect the team as they travel on the road against the Capitals, who are tied with Columbus for the most points in hockey during the 2016-17 season.
