Earlier today, it was announced by Armando Salguero of The Miami Herald that Miami Dolphins quarterback Jay Cutler was in the concussion protocol. Salguero has since retracted that statement, saying that it was running back Jay Ajayi who is in concussion protocol.
However, Ajayi still needs to be cleared by an independent neurologist before he can officially be out of protocol and good to go.
The 24-year-old suffered a concussion back on July 31 and missed Miami’s first preseason game as a result.
Ajayi, who played his college football at Boise State University, was originally selected by the Dolphins in the fifth round (149th pick overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft.
He played only sparingly as a rookie, carrying the ball 87 times for 187 yards and a touchdown.
The London, England native broke out during his sophomore season, however, rushing for 1,272 yards off of 260 attempts and reaching the end zone eight times on the ground.
Ajayi played three seasons at Boise State, culminating in a monster junior campaign that saw him rack up 1,823 rushing yards and 28 rushing touchdowns while also catching 50 passes for 535 yards and four scores.
The six-foot, 220-pounder also tallied 1,425 yards and 18 scores as a rusher during is sophomore collegiate season.
The Dolphins will play their next preseason game on Thursday when they host the Baltimore Ravens at 7 p.m. ET.
