Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson notably burst onto the scene last season en route to solidifying himself as one of the best in the game today.

However, Johnson’s workload also significantly increased for a struggling Cardinals franchise in 2016-17. As a result, Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians has publicly stated that the NFC West franchise will be sure to take care of the up-and-coming rusher going forward.

“I think [his usage is] just right,” Arians said on Wednesday morning, via NBC Sports’ Pro Football Talk. “I’d like to get it up a little bit more in receiving yards. Early in the season he had a chance to have big game and he ran the wrong route a couple of times. I kept telling him all year about that. I said, ‘You would have had your 1,000 and 1,000 [rushing and receiving yards] if you’d have busted those ones in September. … I think 30 touches is not too much for him when you’re talking about 10 receptions, 20 carries. And that’s not 20 times up the middle where he’s gonna get busted up. We’re going to make sure we take care of him.”

The 25-year-old running back is now gearing up for his third go-round atop the highest level after spending his first two seasons in the desert as a member of the Cardinals. Johnson has notably appeared in all 16 regular-season games on both occasions while upping the ante from 125 carries as a rookie to 293 touches in 2016-17.

Over the course of his 16 regular-season appearances from a season ago, Johnson rushed for 1,239 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also amassed 80 receptions for another 879 yards and four more scores. It is also worth noting that his rookie campaign only produced 36 receptions for 457 yards and four touchdowns alongside 581 rushing yards and eight scores.
