Arsenal picks off Sunderland

Arsenal took a 4-1 win over Sunderland on Saturday at the Stadium of Light after two goals each by Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud.

The Gunners took the lead in the 19th minute through Alexis Sanchez. The Chilean has been in fine form, and once again started in the striker position. Jermain Defoe tied things up for the home side in the 65th minute from the penalty spot, but substitute Olivier Giroud came off the bench to score with his first touch of the game in the 71st minute.

The Frenchman added a second in the 76th minute before Sanchez scored his second of the game in the 78th minute. Manager Arsene Wenger was very pleased to have gotten the win which sees them stay level on points with leaders Manchester City.

“I am happy with the performance, with the result,” Wenger said. “At some stage we were questioned with our spirit as well, because we missed many chances. At 1-1 you think you have the chance to lose a game that should be over, but we kept going again and had another go. In the end we won in a comfortable way. Overall I feel it was important for us to win today, because we had won six [in a row] and then drew at home last weekend, which was disappointing. So to have another game without a win would maybe have created some uncertainty so it was important to win the game.”

Arsenal takes on Ludogorets in the Champions League on Tuesday and could book a ticket to the next round with a win if PSG gets at least a draw against FC Basel.
