Four-star running back prospect Dameon Pierce announced Thursday that’s he’s re-opening his recruitment after decommitting from Alabama.
Pierce, who’s out of Bainbridge, Georgia, is the nation’s fifth-best running back recruit for the Class of 2018, according to 247Sports. He holds offers from fellow SEC schools Florida, Auburn, South Carolina and Georgia, as well as offers from Clemson, Florida State and many others.
His decision to decommit from Alabama had partly to do with the lack of visits he took before committing there on July 1 of last year.
“Due to a recent conversation with my Mom, I’m right now back at square one in my recruiting process,” Pierce said to Dawg Nation in April “I didn’t take enough visits before I committed to Alabama. It stands out to me now that I need to take more visits and weigh my options. So that’s what I’m doing right now.”
However, at the time of that report, Pierce also said that Alabama was still his front-runner.
The Georgia native took an unofficial visit to Georgia on April 22 and took an unofficial visit to Florida on March 18. He also participated in Florida State’s junior day on Feb. 18.
“I wouldn’t say (Georgia is) recruiting me very hard right now but they are saying they want me and they need me to be in their program,” Pierce said. “I stay in touch with them.”
According to the Dawg Nation report, the conversation Pierce had with his mother that has swayed him from Alabama at the moment had to do with his visit.
“They toured us around the athletic facility but she didn’t get to see where the dorms were at and where all the educational aspects were at,” Pierce said. “That’s all she had to say on that. It was an incomplete visit in terms of the presentation. She didn’t get to see everything she wanted to.”
