Jim Caldwell and his coaching staff are still waiting for news about their future with the Detroit Lions.

Instead of announcing a decision on Caldwell when he met with the media Monday, new general manager Bob Quinn pushed the decision off into the near future.

“I only met Coach Caldwell for the first time a few minutes ago, and the meeting lasted about 30 seconds,” said Quinn, who was hired Friday. “I’m going to sit down with him and have a long conversation about this organization and where it needs to go. I don’t know when that will happen, but it will be sooner rather than later.

Quinn, who spent 16 years in Bill Belichick’s scouting department before leaving for Detroit, praised Caldwell for keeping the Lions together after their 1-7 start – they went 6-2 in the second half of the season – but said that he won’t be judged strictly on 2015 or even his two-year tenure in the Motor City.

“I’m going to look at the entirety of his career,” he said. “As the director of pro scouting in New England, I’ve evaluated Jim’s teams back to his days when we were battling him in Indianapolis, and we’ll look at all of that.”
