Nationals really didn’t need this Jayson Werth mistake

Already trailing by three runs in the top of the sixth inning of Thursday’s NLDS Game 5, the Washington Nationals surrendered another run as left fielder Jayson Werth misplayed an Addison Russell fly ball. Werth attempted to make a sliding catch but missed the ball, which went past him and rolled to the outfield wall.

Ben Zobrist scored the Cubs’ eighth run of the game as a result, and interestingly enough Russell was given a double by the official scorer. The only explanation for that scoring decision may be the assumption that Werth lost the ball in the lights.
