Nationals and Dodgers Odds-On Favorites in 2015

MLB Tonight

Baseball has countless adages; chief among those in February is that pitching wins postseason games.

The Giants have proven that in each of the previous three even-numbered seasons. As pitchers and catchers report to the Grapefruit and Cactus Leagues, odds makers in Las Vegas rely on this tried and true MLB fact.

Despite a lack of postseason success recently, (or in the case of Washington–never) the Nationals and Dodgers will enter the 2015 MLB season as the odds-on favorites to win the World Series.

Why are the Nationals and Dodgers the favorites now before a single game, let alone Opening Day rosters have been set?

The Nationals starting staff led baseball in ERA in 2014 and bolstered an already-strong unit by adding former AL CY Young winner Max Scherzer to the rotation. The Dodgers may have lost some pieces offensively, but their rotation will be anchored by the game’s most dominant southpaw starter, Clayton Kershaw.

Regular season success hasn't translated into World Series rings for Kershaw and the Dodgers.

If pitching wins in October and beyond, then odds makers don’t have much faith in the Rockies and Phillies staffs as those clubs begin the 2015 season with the longest odds in MLB at 150/1.

Will the Dodgers and Nationals meet in the NLCS with a World Series berth on the line? There’s an entire season getting ready to unfold.
