Michael Sam took another step to get back into the NFL this weekend by attending the first-ever veteran combine in Tempe, Arizona.
The former-seventh round pick of the St. Louis Rams joined 104 other free agents in an attempt to impress scouts as all 32 NFL teams were represented at the Arizona Cardinals practice facility. Players performed position-specific drills and also ran the 40 yard dash. Unofficially, Sam was clocked at 5.07 and 5.1; during the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine the 6’2″ 261-pound defensive end ran the 40 in 4.91 seconds.
Reporters inquired whether his scheduled appearance on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars, would limit NFL teams’ interests in him, but Sam refused to answer any non-football related questions.
“I am very confident that I will be playing football this year somewhere,” Sam said. “So we’ll leave that at that.”
The door is presumably open for Sam to also play in Canada if NFL teams do not come calling, but Sam says that making an NFL team is still his goal. “I’ll play for whoever,” Sam said. “If the Rams or Cowboys want me back I will go there [on the] first flight out.”
