The NWSL grabbed a huge name for the Orlando Pride this season, bringing on Brazilian star Marta from FC Rosengard in Sweden for the 2017 campaign.
She was forced to miss the club’s season opener in Portland this past week, as visa issues have been delaying her arrival from Europe – but the Orlando Sentinel confirms on Thursday that the 31-year-old star has made it to Florida and will appear in the team’s home opener on Saturday.
A native of Dois Riachos, Brazil, Marta is one of the most decorated female soccer players in the world. She’s a five-time FIFA World Player of the Year, and currently holds the record for most goals scored at the FIFA Women’s World Cup tournament with 15.
Getting Marta is a huge add for the Pride, as she joins the club on a two-year contract with a year three option. The international appeal of seeing the Brazilian star – considered by many to be the greatest female soccer player all-time – with Alex Morgan upon her return later this season from France should be a huge draw for the women’s club. Already peppered with big names like Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris from the US, as well as both Monica and Camila from Brazil, the Orlando Pride may offer enough star power to draw huge crowds this year.
The Pride will take on the Washington Spirit with Marta in the lineup on Saturday evening, hosting their league rivals at 4:00 PM EST.
