Two former UFC champions in Robbie Lawler and Rafael dos Anjos will square off in the main event at UFC Winnipeg on December 16, the heralded mixed martial arts promotion has formally announced.
Lawler, who currently owns a lifetime professional mixed martial arts record of 28-11 (9-2 UFC), will be heading into his second bout since losing the welterweight title to Tyron Woodley in July 2016. Lawler ultimately came up short against Woodley via first-round knockout. The 35-year-old brawler then returned to “The Octagon” nearly a year to the day later and proceeded to defeat Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone via unanimous decision.
Prior to falling to Woodley, Lawler had won his first two title defenses, topping Rory MacDonald via TKO — the second time that he had beaten MacDonald — in July 2015 in addition edging Carlos Condit by split-decision in January 2016.
Dos Anjos owns a professional mixed martial arts record of 27-9 and has gone 16-7 under the UFC umbrella. He last fought a little over a month ago, defeating Neil Magny with an arm-triangle choke that resulted in a submission victory on September 9. The 32-year-old also topped Tarec Saffiedine via unanimous decision back in June. Both of those wins by dos Anjos came after he moved up to 170 pounds.
Prior to moving up to the welterweight division, dos Anjos had dropped his last two fights as a lightweight, losing the 155-pound strap to Eddie Alvarez in July 2016 and then falling to Tony Ferguson four months later in November.
