The LA Galaxy continued their frantic salary dump Thursday, selling Brazilian midfielder Juninho to Mexico’s Club Tijuana for an undisclosed fee.
The sale comes days after the Galaxy sold star center-back Omar Gonzalez, a member of the U.S. national team, to Pachuca, another Mexican team. The Galaxy didn’t receive huge transfer fees for either player, but the moves allow them to take $1.8 million off their salary cap – money they intend to use to sign former England international Ashley Cole, who now plays for Roma.
Juninho made 180 starts in six seasons for the Galaxy, playing a key role in three MLS Cup wins and two Supporters’ Shield championships. He scored 16 goals.
At just 5’7″, Juninho was a fan favorite in Los Angeles, and thanked the supporters with a statement on Twitter.
