In an article written for The Players’ Tribune, Kobe Bryant announced that this will indeed be his final season.
In a passage from his article:
You gave a six-year-old boy his Laker dream
And I’ll always love you for it.
But I can’t love you obsessively for much longer.
This season is all I have left to give.
My heart can take the pounding
My mind can handle the grind
But my body knows it’s time to say goodbye.
This season being Bryant’s last is something that was becoming more and more obvious by the day. His body was clearly able to get the message across to his mind that the mileage was taking its toll.
Bryant is averaging 15.7 points per game on 16.7 shots and 31.5 percent shooting. His field-goal percentage is six percent worse than last season and 14 percent lower than his career average.
Despite his poor play, Byron Scott made it clear that he would not bench Kobe. The Lakers are log-jammed with guards, including Bryant, Jordan Clarkson, Lou Williams, Nick Young and No. 2 overall pick D’Angelo Russell.
The Lakers are 2-13 on the season.
Adam Silver released the following statement on Bryant’s announcement:
