NHL Tonight – Stadium Series a Hit
The San Jose Sharks became the 19th NHL franchise to play an outdoor hockey game Saturday night. but unfortunately for over 70,000 northern California fans it wasn’t a happy ending as the Kings defeated the Sharks 2-1 at Levi’s Stadium.
While the Sharks continue to struggle against their southern California counterparts (LA has eliminated San Jose in consecutive Stanley Cup Playoff series), the 2015 edition of the NHL Stadium Series was a tremendous success.
Marian Gaborik netted the eventual game-winner early in the third period, but most of the talk afterwards centered around celebrating another outdoor game.
“This was a little more significant, obviously, because this was our show,” Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. “These were our fans. … They showed up in droves. I know there were Kings fans here, and there were just plain hockey fans. That’s what made tonight so special. But the fact we lost was disappointing. But to be part of it, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
Home teams in outdoor hockey games put on a show, but haven’t won nearly as much as the locals would like as the road teams have an impressive 11-3-1 record.
