Bill Self has had no problem on the recruiting trail for the Kansas Jayhawks, and his latest verbal commit is a big one, both literally and figuratively.
Silvio De Sousa, a 6-foot-9 forward out of the 2018 class who is a 5-star prospect according to Rivals.com, told the Journal-World on Wednesday that he verbally pledged to Kansas at the conclusion of his official visit in Lawrence on Sunday.
“When I was there in Kansas, I couldn’t even express myself or how I was feeling,” De Sousa told the Journal-World. “When you love something, there’s no way you will describe it. I knew about their basketball but I didn’t know about the campus, the coaches and stuff like that. I felt like that was the place I wanted to be, the culture and the coaches were so great around me. That’s one of the things I’ve been looking for and I found that in them.”
Rivals tags De Sousa as the No. 25 player out of the 2018 class. With Florida, Florida State, Louisville, LSU, Maryland, Georgia, Kentucky and Syracuse all in the mix for the lauded prospect, none of those programs topped what the Jayhawks had to offer.
And it appears Kansas University checked all the boxes for De Sousa.
“Once I find what I want, what I’ve been looking for, I wouldn’t like to take any more visits,” he said. “Kansas is my final destination.”
De Sousa may only be the first oral commitment out of the 2018 class for Self and the Jayhawks, but that’s a significant piece to start building around.
