We won’t know how Jeff Gordon’s story ends, but the beginning of the last chapter is off to a perfect start.
Gordon earned the pole position for the Daytona 500, which takes place on Sunday, February 22nd.
He announced earlier this year that this would be his last full season racing in NASCAR. Gordon will be looking for his fourth Daytona 500 championship en route to his fifth championship.
If it wasn’t Gordon winning the pole, the bigger issue would’ve been with the structure of qualifying. The group stage turned into more strategy than speed.
Jeff Gordon won the pole and gave NASCAR a great story, but this group qualifying format should never, ever return at a superspeedway.

He probably didn’t mind it.
