A “Hard Knocks” episode featuring the highly anticipated talent competition also included an exchange between the starting quarterbacks for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Cleveland Browns.
Shortly before DeShone Kizer was officially named the Week 1 Browns starter, he was on the receiving end of a brief Jameis Winston monologue. The third-year Bucs starter — and most prominent voice of the latest HBO training camp show — offered some advice to the rookie Browns passer after their preseason game Saturday night.
“Hey, patience is the easiest way. All right? Take my word for it because I’m a risk-taker. Have patience,” Winston said (via Chareen Williams of ProFootballTalk). “Who you got? You got coach (Hue) Jackson. So listen to him. Let him guide you. But patience is the easiest way. Taking that ball down, even though you got that cannon. Listen to me, because they ain’t going to tell you that. You’re spoiled. You’re blessed. Do your thing.”
Kizer appreciated the speech. He will be the fifth Browns starting quarterback in the past five years and the first rookie to take the Week 1 reins since Brandon Weeden did so in 2012. Weeden was a first-round pick, whereas Kizer arrived out of Notre Dame as a second-round selection. So his rookie season will be interesting to monitor, even if the Browns aren’t expected to compete for a playoff spot.
Winston received the Week 1 start but was expected to after being chosen No. 1 overall in 2015. The former Heisman Trophy winner helped the Bucs to a 6-10 record that season after they’d finished 2-14 a year earlier, putting them in position to draft Winston.
