Jackson says Free Agents are Knicks Priority

The New York Knicks are setting themselves up for the future with a likely high draft pick, but don’t get too excited about the draft, says Phil Jackson.

The Knicks at this point have the best odds at the No. 1 overall pick, but president Phil Jackson says don’t put all your stock in just the draft. No, Jackson is still set on the Knicks making waves in free agency.

“We know what the first-round pick is going to mean for us, but we also know we’re going to build our team with free agents,” Jackson said before their game against the Lakers. “A hundred and ninety players or so are going to be free agents. Not half the league, but like a third of the league is going to be free agents. So that’s where our priority stands.”

While the rest of the league is dropping jaws at the thought of landing a player like Duke’s Jahlil Okafor, Kentucky’s Karl Anthony-Towns or Ohio State’s DeAngelo Russell, Jackson is still dead-set on going after a big fish in the market to speed up the process.

Sure, that’s exactly why the Knicks are in the position that they are–because they try to speed everything up rather than stay patient and develop talent–but Jackson has never had to develop talent like that. He’s had the Michael Jordan’s, Kobe Bryant’s and Shaquille O’Neal’s.

One thing is for sure: the Knicks will keep us entertained this offseason, if nothing else.
