On any other night, the headline would’ve belonged all to Denzel Valentine, but not on the night of Tom Izzo’s 500th win.
Valentine recorded his second triple-double of the season to lead Michigan State to a 99-68 win over Boston College, giving Izzo the 500th win of his head-coaching career.
“It’s Thanksgiving, when you’re supposed to give thanks,” Izzo said. “I’m thankful for the guys I got, the guys I have and all the people who have helped me have this special win.”
Valentine finished with 29 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Tum Tum Narin added 13 points and eight assists.
The Spartans raced out to a 13-point halftime lead before blowing the game open in the second half.
But on this night, it was all about recognizing Izzo.
Izzo has only been a head coach at Michigan State, which he took over in 1995-96. The Spartans went 16-16 that season, but they reached 22 wins and the Sweet Sixteen in his third season. Michigan State made the Final Four in his fourth season and won the title in his fifth season.
Overall, Izzo is 500-199 in over 21 seasons.
