At a seeming impasse on talks involving Mike Napoli, the Rangers are the latest team to check in on Mark Trumbo, yet another big-time free slugger looking for a job.

Trumbo, who led the AL with 47 home runs, makes sense for Texas, which needs to replenish its offense. It isn’t known how involved the Rangers are with Trumbo yet.

There were reports a week ago that the Rangers were making progress with Napoli, and he’s still a consideration, but the sides remained a bit apart on a deal to return Napoli back to Arlington a third time.

Texas, which lost first baseman Mitch Moreland to the Red Sox, has mostly laid low in free agency this winter. But after losing Moreland, plus DH Carlos Beltran and center fielder Ian Desmond, it is in the market to bolster its offense.

Trumbo has received interest from the A’s, who have agreed to a deal with Trevor Plouffe, and others since talks broke off with the Orioles, who offered a big three-year deal early in free agency. The Orioles took their initial offer off the table, and at least at the moment don’t seem inclined to put it back on the table, leaving Trumbo to shop around.

The Rockies are among teams to be monitoring the slugger market, which has been slow to move. Yoenis Cespedes got $110 million to go back to the Mets and Edwin Encarnacion got $60 million with a chance to get to $80 million in a surprise deal with the Indians, but several accomplished power hitters remain on the market.

At the top of that market are Trumbo, outfielder Jose Bautista and Napoli. Texas is one team that really can’t consider Bautista following his on-field fight with Rougned Odor, so Trumbo makes sense.
