The Toronto Blue Jays are close to a deal with free agent pitcher Mat Latos, sources confirm to FanRag Sports. Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet was the first to report that the two sides were nearing a deal.

The 29-year-old has made a total of 194 big league appearances while starting 186 of those outings. However, because the Blue Jays already have five bona-fide starters lined up for the 2017 season, Latos’ services as a starter may not be needed right away.

It is also worth noting that five of his eight career relief appearances came last season as a member of the Washington Nationals. In addition, all eight of those relief appearances have come over the course of the last two seasons.

Latos originally broke into the major leagues as a member of the San Diego Padres back in 2009. After spending three years in San Diego, he then spent three more suiting up for the Cincinnati Reds. Making a name for himself in Cincinnati, Latos’ career then become derailed in 2015 en route to playing for three different teams that season.

After suiting up for the Miami Marlins, Los Angeles Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers in 2015, Latos then split last season between the Nationals and Chicago White Sox. If he indeed lands in Toronto, it will be his sixth big league club in the last three seasons.
