The New York Giants decided to waive defensive end Damantre Moore after he started a fight with line-mate Cullen Jenkins over free Beats headphones that star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. had given as gifts to the team. As a third-round pick of the Giants in 2013, Moore was in the third year of a four-year, $2.8 million contract. Jenkins is in the third and final year of an $8 million deal, and has earned over $30 million in his 12-year NFL career.
The disruption comes at an incredibly poor time for Tom Coughlin’s club, which is currently mired in an underwhelming three-way tie for the NFC East division lead with a 5-7 record. Football Outsiders currently calculates that the Giants have a 21.5% of making the playoffs. Teams in other divisions who are currently 5-7, such as the Miami Dolphins and Oakland Raiders, are given a less-than-2% chance of making the postseason thanks to their stronger divisions.
New York travels to Miami this week to face the Dolphins on Monday Night Football. After starting the season 5-4, the Giants are currently on a three-game losing streak, losing games to New England, Washington, and their stadium-sharing Jets each by one possession.
