FIS World Alpine Skiing Championships Day 1

The World's Best Skiers are in Beaver Creek

Vail and Beaver Creek are buzzing with anticipation and speed.

After years of preparations to host the World Alpine Skiing Championships, Beaver Creek’s Raptor Course is ready for the Ladies’ Super G. The weather (actually high winds) delayed the race 30 minutes and forced officials to move the start further down the mountain.

America’s Speed Queen and local racer Lindsey Vonn will look to assert her dominance in this event after coming off back-to-back World Cup wins. Vonn’s boyfriend, Tiger Woods, was spotted several times by NBC Sports cameras during the delayed start of the race.

Vonn knows the Raptor Course well.

The crowds at the Red Tail Finish are in a frenzy and the cowbells are clanging away, the race is underway!

Having lived in Colorado and calling Beaver Creek my home mountain for the last 17 years, I love the overhead shots of the beautiful resort as provided by NBCSports Network. The Raptor Course is perfectly carved out of two of the mountain’s steepest runs, Peregrine and Kestrel. Always one of my go-to’s on a powder day the Birds of Prey lift provides access to Kestrel, Peregrine, Goshawk (incredible glade with technical tree runs) and Golden Eagle (Men’s Downhill and Super G). Unfortunately, but understandably so for local skiers and snowboarders, the race courses haven’t been open to the public for much of the year.

If you happen to be watching on television (Channel 220 on DirecTV) keep an eye out for me on the chairlift; I’ll be the guy in the black FanRagSports jacket. If you’re attending the races or getting some turns in on Beaver Creek, take a ride with me and Be Seen, Be Heard, Be a Fan!

Gov. OC

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper welcomes race fans and spectators to the World Alpine Skiing Championships during the opening ceremony.

Skiing fans will  not only be treated to the world’s best skiers for the next two weeks, but also an incredible assortment of live music, beer, food and wine festivals, along with family and fan friendly events. At last night’s opening ceremony in Vail, spectators witnessed the introduction of skiing legends, local entertainment, and racers from the 70 countries competing in these 2015 FIS World Alpine Skiing Championships.

Following the awards ceremonies each night in Vail’s Championship Plaza will be a free concert featuring some of the most popular musical acts. Take a look at the concert lineup right here.

Avon is located below the base of Beaver Creek and will be a hot spot for one of my favorite skiing activities–Apres Ski. Every day from 2-5:30 race fans, skiers, and spectators will gather for live music, hot toddies, cold beer and special appearances by celebrity guests and racers.
