The New York Rangers are joining the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference Final after Derek Stepan scored an overtime goal in Game 7 against the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night. The Rangers were down 3-1 in the series, but stormed back with three consecutive victories to keep their Stanley Cup hopes alive.
One reason New York continues to thrive this postseason is because of their impeccable overtime record. They are a perfect 4-0 in extra time this year.
Alex Ovechkin opened the scoring in the first period, before Kevin Hayes equalized the score on the power play in the second. Stepan’s third goal of the playoffs came 11:24 into overtime to send the Rangers faithful into a frenzy.
The Eastern Conference Final begins Saturday at Madison Square Garden.
